Glacier Hikes

The Root Glacier, smack dab next to Kennicott, is perhaps Alaska's most impressive glacier...Why you ask? Well imagine your adventure, on an enormous glacier, in front of the tallest wall of ice in North America, the two mile high Stairway Icefall.

Flightseeing

Alaska has several world class flightseeing experiences, but they all pale in comparison to the 50 or 70 minute flightseeing trips in Wrangell St. Elias National Park! This park has the highest concentration of mountains and glaciers in the world. You're only going to sense the immensity of landscape by bush plane.

Rafting

Packrafting is the latest new sport - an inflatable raft in a backpack means access to rivers previously unreachable with conventional rafts. You will also discover other rafting trips in McCarthy such as Floats in a glacier lake; Whitewater day trips combining flightsees; and even multi-day rafting trips. The awesome rafting companies in McCarthy have great adventures to share with you.

Nature Walks

There are plenty of great hikes in Americas wilderness. Many get you above the alpine (tree line). The Boreal forest, alluvial plains and immense mountain valley landscapes would take a lifetime to explore. Be sure to pick up a hiking map available in the hotel when checking in.

Spent 2 nights here and wished it could have been longer. Such a lovely place away from the hustle and bustle of life. The quirkiness of the rooms more than made up for having to share bathrooms. Bathrooms were spotless. Hope to go back again one day.

remote alaskan community

The essence of the experience is in letting the town unfold. At night. That's right, the secrets of this one of a kind community come to life at night. While Kennicott is fast asleep, the local community in McCarthy has a whole lot to celebrate! There's something to be said for clear thinking kids who grew up knowing that you gotta get firewood or you'll go cold.
